Talk Radio 702 has made a significant
contribution to making Soweto greener by planting 702 trees
in the township. Scores of dignitaries, celebrities and Sowetans
gathered in Phiri on Wednesday 9th March for the official tree-planting
ceremony.
Johannesburg Executive Mayor, Amos Masondo, and former ANC
Womens' League President, Winnie-Madikizela Mandela, planted
the first tree. 702 undertook the initiative in conjunction
with Old Mutual and Food and Trees for Africa (FTFA). Speaking
at the ceremony, 702's former station manager and now Group
Head of News and Talk Programming, Yusuf Abramjee, said: "We
are committed to making Soweto greener...The one meter tall
indigenous or fruit trees were sourced from various nurseries
in the area, which helps support emerging and community businesses."
Abramjee said: "Trees are not only a means of beautification
of an area traditionally not associated with much 'greening',
but the planting of them will improve the value of houses in
the area and the environment."

New Station Manager, Pheladi Gwangwa, said: "This 702
initiative forms part of Soweto's 100 anniversary celebrations
and 702's 25 years of broadcasting." "It is great
to see so many individuals and orgnisations committed to making
Soweto greener," said Gwangwa.
The trees planted by 702 are indigenous shade trees and will
greatly benefit the area of Phiri, Soweto, and the residents.
Thank you to Old Mutual and Food and Trees for Africa for making
this worthwhile initiative possible.
