| The onset of winter is when the demand for energy
is heightened drastically. In an effort to educate South Africans
on energy efficiency, the Department of Minerals and Energy, the
National Electricity Regulator, and Eskom embarked on a joint
national educational and awareness campaign. ComutaNet, Africa’s
largest commuter media organisation, was tasked to encourage commuters
to start contributing to a national discipline to conserve energy.
To increase energy conservation awareness, reduce consumption,
and to promote the efficient use of electricity, ComutaNet’s
Interactive Gazebos tactically situated in the most densely
populated transit hubs around the country were selected to successfully
dispatch this communication to millions of commuters. These
gazebos, strategically positioned, enable skilled promotional
staff to educate and advise commuters on how to use energy smartly
thereby saving money and ultimately working towards protecting
the environment. ComutaNet promoters handed out brochures demonstrating
energy saving concepts and encouraged members of the crowds
to pass this vital information on to family and friends.
As competitive interactions capture commuter attention, ComutaNet
incorporated a competition to reinforce the promotions. The
gist was clear - energy encompasses more than electricity, and
methods to save energy need to be incorporated into all South
Africans’ lifestyles, whether cooking, using gas, coal
or other heating devices, and driving vehicles.

The message called for a national discipline
to integrate the smart use of energy to conserve natural resources
such as coal, gas, and liquid fuels. The competition required
commuters to answer questions based on the Energy Efficiency
Month leaflet, and those that answered correctly, received exciting
prizes.
“The awareness campaign generated ‘electrifying’
exposure for the Eskom Energy Efficiency initiative, as millions
of commuters, mass consumers of electricity, were reached through
ComutaNet’s campaign. We are always keen to be involved
in initiatives that educate and improve people’s lives
and were delighted to have contributed to the energy conservation
awareness campaign”, says Kenneth Maomela, ComutaNet’s
Executive Chairman.
